Why Strategic Pitches Matter More Than a Massive Media Network
Dec 17, 2024You might think that to be a wildly successful PR professional, you need a massive network of media contacts. But here’s the truth: you don’t. What really matters is your ability to craft strategic, targeted, and timely pitches.
This is the foundation of everything in PR. It doesn’t matter how close you are to your favorite editor or how many journalists know your name if you can’t deliver a story that’s relevant to their audience. A well-crafted pitch will always outperform a Rolodex (who even says Rolodex anymore?) of contacts. And as inboxes get flooded with AI-generated, templated, and lazy pitches, this skill becomes your competitive edge.
1. Why Your Clients Care About Strategic Pitches—Not Your Network
Clients don’t care about how many media contacts you have. They care about results. Results mean relevant, high-value placements in top-tier publications that move the needle for their business.
What doesn’t move the needle? Those spray-and-pray press releases that get picked up by random websites. (If you’re still submitting a press release distribution list as “coverage,” let’s stop that immediately.)
Top-tier placements take strategy, not just connections. Editors won’t write about your client just because they know you or like you—you need to give them something irresistible to work with. Something timely. Something relevant. Something valuable for their audience.
2. How I Landed a Top-Tier Placement With Zero Contacts
When I first broke into PR, I had no media contacts—none. I was a civil litigator practicing law, not even officially in PR yet. I fell in love with a small beauty brand and decided to help them, for free, because I believed in their products.
I reached out to the brand owner as a random stranger on the internet (not sketchy at all…) and said, “Send me a box of products. I want to help you get this into the hands of more people.”
And she did.
That brand had a fragrance called I Am Beautiful. At the same time, Christina Aguilera’s hit song Beautiful was everywhere. I found her publicist’s contact information online and sent the fragrance to Christina. I tied the product to her song, pitched it to Us Weekly, and landed a feature in their Buzz column—all without knowing a single journalist there.
How? By crafting a pitch that was:
-
Highly relevant: Tied to a celebrity weekly publication and a hit song.
-
Perfectly timed: The song was at the top of the charts.
-
Visually irresistible: The product was beautiful and affordable.
This one feature was a game-changer. It gave the brand credibility, opened retail doors, and opened career doors for me. I learned something that would become the foundation of my PR success:
It’s not about who you know—it’s about what you pitch.
3. The Ripple Effect of Mastering Strategic Pitching
When you focus on strategic, targeted pitches, the benefits compound:
-
Organic Media Growth: Every successful pitch expands your media network naturally. Editors will start to recognize your name and trust your pitches. They’ll know you deliver great stories, and they’ll open your emails.
-
Client Referrals: Happy clients are your best advocates. When they see results, they’ll refer you to others.
-
Compelling Case Studies: Top-tier placements give you tangible case studies that attract new, premium clients.
-
Sustainable Scaling: When you deliver consistent, high-value results, you can charge more, grow your revenue, and scale your agency.
4. Niching Down Makes Pitching Easier
Here’s another game-changer: niche down. Choose a few industries or topics you genuinely love and want to work in long-term. When you focus on specific areas, you get to know the media contacts, beats, and audience preferences better. You become the trusted PR pro in that niche—the one editors recognize and rely on.
For me, it’s beauty, cosmetics, and baby/kids products. Two decades in, I’m still passionate about these spaces, and it’s easier to serve clients because I’ve built expertise and relationships there.
5. Strategic Pitching: Your Key to PR Success
PR is cumulative. It takes time to build momentum, but when you master the art of strategic pitching, everything snowballs:
-
Your pitches get noticed.
-
Your placements generate results.
-
Your clients stay longer and refer you to others.
-
Your media network grows naturally.
-
Your agency scales sustainably.
Here’s the bottom line: A massive media network doesn’t matter if you’re not sending pitches that are timely, relevant, and valuable. Editors don’t care how well they know you—they care about the stories you bring to the table.
And that’s great news because it means you can break into PR and stand out, even if you’re starting from scratch. I did it, and you can, too.
